Golden Gate Pencil Bridge

‘Golden Gate Pencil Bridge’ at PAPERWORLD

Faber-Castell presents a reproduction of the Golden Gate Bridge in colored pencils

With its ‘Golden Gate Pencil Bridge’ sculpture, Faber-Castell will be presenting an impressive piece of art at the PAPERWORLD trade fair. The artwork contains of 8,000 colored and graphite pencils that are joined together to form a reproduction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Artist Kerstin Schulz would like to illustrate with her sculpture that people can build bridges with communication (through writing and drawing).

The artwork also contains a special aspect only revealed to especially adept observers: if you multiply the numbers of pencils used (8,000) by their average length (16 cm), this is the result in a length of 128,000 cm.

The Golden Gate Bridge at San Francisco, which served as the model, is particularly noted for the steel cables that carry the structure. If all these cables were placed end-to-end, they would span the earth three times and result in a length of 128,000 km. The length of the assembled colored and graphite pencils thus equates to the length of the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge in centimeters!

Seen at PAPERWORLD at the Faber-Castell booth, Hall 3.1D 61 (press tour Jan. 29, 2010, 11:00am).
